The Devil's Home on Leave (Factory 2) - Derek Raymond

Compared to He Died with His Eyes Open the stakes are higher, the patter is tighter, the violence is grislier, but it lacks the twisted ending and thematic consistency of the first Factory novel. There's some background that explains the unnamed protagonist's decision to stay in Unexplained Deaths, the non-prestigious department he works out of, but then the case he works in this book is so far outside of that purview that he isn't fighting for forgotten victims but just doing the kind of thing he makes fun of other cops for.
